AS LONG AS BREATH OR BOW explores a distinct pitch structure articulated through systematized improvisation. The players are given a set of 10 rules which are introduced and subtracted throughout the piece's duration. These rules contain specific restrictions and allowance concerning rhythm, timbre, dynamics and time. Often the rules co-exist and the players have to calculate multiple possibilities at once with the given materials. The only player who does not do this is the percussionist, who creates a constant texture of resonance behind the ensemble with close-miked metals, cymbals and gongs. The combination of the metallic bass and overlaid orchestration creates one large "meta-instrument" - a constantly unified and evolving whole lurching through time.
